Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud praised the European Union for allowing Somalia to join in the Cotonou Agreement in a press release Monday (June 10th).

"The benefit of the Cotonou Agreement is that Somalia will be eligible to receive development projects from the EU, which will help us to re-build our country," he said, adding that the development projects will provide jobs to young Somalis so they can take part in the re-construction of Somalia.

The decision puts Somalia on par with more than 70 countries in the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States who enjoy a stronger relationship with Europe. "We have placed considerable effort into improving our international relations and this represents a great step in our return to the community of nations," he said.

Somalia has been granted observer status immediately, with subsequent accession to full membership next year.
