The Ugandan contingent of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) captured 52 suspected al-Shabaab militants in the first quarter of 2013, Uganda's Daily Monitor reported on Friday (April 19th).

"Additionally, 23 fighters disengaged to the contingent and a couple of them, including key commanders, were killed," said a report from the Uganda People's Defence Force released last week. "About 50 al-Shabaab associates, including tax collectors and informers, surrendered and this was a big blow to the terrorists' manpower levels."

"There was a rapid expansion of territory, especially in February, with several simultaneous captures of strategic places -- a move that left the enemy completely off balance," said force commander Brigadier General Michael Ondoga.
