A Somali court of appeals in Benadir adjourned for one week after hearing evidence on Wednesday (February 20th) in the case of a woman who said she was raped by security forces and journalist Abdiasis Abdinuur Ibrahim who interviewed her, Somalia's Hiiraan Online reported.
Judge Hassan Mohamed Ali heard evidence from the defence aimed at exonerating the two defendants, who were sentenced to one year in prison on February 5th.
"We hope that these two [arrested] people get a fair trial, and we hope that they will be released from jail," said Mohamed Ibrahim, defence lawyer for the journalist and alleged rape victim Lul Ali Osman.
The case is expected to resume next week, and the Somali government has said it would not interfere with the court's verdict.
