US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday (January 17th) announced her country's official recognition of the government in Somalia after meeting with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Washington.

"The people and leaders of Somalia have fought and sacrificed to bring greater stability, security, and peace to their nation," Clinton said. "There is still a long way to go and many challenges to confront, but we have seen a new foundation for that better future being laid."

The United States has not recognized a Somali government since 1991, and Clinton said her country is now looking forward to "an open, transparent dialogue about what more we can do to help the people of Somalia realise their own dreams."

"For the first time in two decades, this country has a representative government with a new president, a new parliament, a new prime minister and a new constitution," she said.

Mohamud voiced optimism for Somalia's future. "We are working for a Somalia that is at peace with itself and with its neighbours, where its citizens can go about their daily lives in safety," he said. "Instability, violent extremism and crime in Somalia are a threat not only to Somalia but also to the region and the world at large. We look to the future with hope, pride and optimism."

"Somalia is very grateful for the unwavering support from the United States to the people of Somalia," he told Clinton, after an earlier meeting with President Barack Obama.

AMERICA IS HELPING A LOT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIRD-WORLD COUNTRIES SO IT IS RECOGNIZING SOMALIA BECAUSE IT IS PEACEFUL. I ADVISE SOMALIS TO FOSTER A CULTURE OF RESOLVING THEIR PROBLEMS THROUGH DIALOGUE AND TO SHUN EMOTION CONFLICT AND GREED FOR POWER WHICH CAUSES THEIR ENEMIES TO INVADE THEM AND CAUSE DISAGREEMENT AMONG THEM TO THE POINT OF WAR. LET SOMEONE’S OPINION BE RESPECTED AND CRITICISM BE DONE IN A CIVILIZED MANNER. LET THEM FEAR GOD.

It is a good step for America to restore diplomatic relations with Somalia.
