Tana River Delta community leaders pledged to support the government's disarmament exercise and to hold peace meetings between the Pokomo and Orma communities, Kenya's Capital FM reported Monday (January 14th).
"We, the leaders from the Tana River County, commit ourselves to keep peace and call for immediate end in the conflict pitting the Pokomos and Ormas," said Tana North lawmaker Omar Soba following a meeting with Internal Security Minister Katoo Ole Metito. "We urge our people to maintain peace and work with the security agencies in identifying inciters and ringleaders behind the attacks."
He called on the government to deploy more security forces in conflict-prone villages.
More than 150 people have been killed in clashes between the two communities since August 2012, with the latest clashes happening on January 10th, when at least 10 people were killed in Kibisu village.
