Tanzanian police are working with local banks to increase security as incidents of ATM fraud and theft increase, Tanzania's The Guardian reported Thursday (January 10th).

The Tanzania Bankers Association said it has been working to educate the public on the risk of revealing their passwords to people, as many of the recent thefts have been found to have been committed by close relatives.

"The system is still new in the country and there is an immediate need to increase safety intelligence measures," said Director of Criminal Investigation Robert Manumba. "We are collaborating with the banks and financial institutions to keep people's money safe through scientific methods."

Several suspects have been arrested in connection with ATM fraud, Dar es Salaam Special Zone Commander Suleiman Kova said. "We are working on the data and will soon announce our joint measures with the financial institutions and banks against these culprits," he said.
