The pro-government Ahlu Sunna wal Jamaa militia (ASWJ) announced on Wednesday (January 9th) that it liberated Dar Moalin village near Bardhere from al-Shabaab, UN-funded Radio Bar-Kulan reported.
ASWJ fighters engaged the militants in a fierce gun battle, pushing them out of the area, said ASWJ spokesman Mohamed Hussein Issack. He said the fall of Dar Moalin will cut off supplies and reinforcement routes to al-Shabaab, thus weakening the militants' frontline defence for Bardhere.
Residents reported this week that al-Shabaab militants have been retreating from Bardhere ahead of advancing Somali and Ethiopian forces.
