Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamed Farole inaugurated a new maximum security prison in Qardho at the weekend, Somalia's Garowe Online reported Sunday (November 25th).

"This prison will not only accommodate those who break the law," Farole said. "It will also rehabilitate them in preparation for social re-integration at the end of their sentences."

UN Development Programme (UNDP) Puntland Director Kean Tran, Puntland Security Minister Khalif Isse and other governmental and cabinet officials attended the inauguration ceremony, where Farole thanked international donors for their support in the construction of the prison.

Tran said that the UNDP will aid with capacity building for the prison staff and administration in the near future.

Last week, the Puntland regional administration inaugurated new facilities for the Puntland Corrections Academy and Headquarters and laid the foundation stone for a prison in Garowe.
