Somali officials announced on Thursday (September 13th) that newly elected President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has been moved to Villa Somalia after surviving a suicide bombing at his hotel on Tuesday, AFP reported.
Mohamud was relocated to the highly fortified complex, which houses several Somali institutions, said Colonel Ali Houmed, spokesman for the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). Outgoing president Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed is still living in Villa Somalia.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attack. The militant group continues to launch attacks within Mogadishu, although the city has been under AMISOM control since August 2011. Al-Shabaab has rejected the political process that led to Mohamud's election on Monday and pledged to continue attacks.
Hassan, who garnered 70% of the vote Monday, will remain at Villa Somalia with Sharif until the official handover Sunday.
