Comprehensive Community Based Rehabilitation in Tanzania (CCBRT) assisted 1,771 children with disabilities and their families in 2011, according to the organisation's annual report, Tanzania's Daily News reported Friday (September 7th).
The annual CCBRT report said that 917 children received care at the non-governmental organisation's House of Hope rehabilitation centre -- 355 as outpatients and 236 in intensive treatment. The Panseti clinic treated 69 babies afflicted with club feet, and provided wheelchairs for 153 physically impaired children. The speech and pathology clinic treated 104 children with hearing difficulties.
The report said anecdotal evidence indicates that a lack of awareness about childhood-onset disabilities and their care and prevention are the primary causes of impairments in children in Tanzania. To counter that, CCBRT trained 159 health professionals in prevention, early detection and referral procedures for children with disabilities.
