Djibouti plans to construct an 18 billion-franc ($100 million) wind farm and water desalination facility in the port of Doraleh, Djibouti's La Nation reported Monday (August 27th).

The desalination plant will produce 45,000 cubic metres of fresh water daily, and research predicts the wind farm will output 20 megawatts per day.

The project is intended to alleviate drinking water shortages in the country, particularly among the capital city's 820,000 inhabitants. The government expects wind power to defray the costs of desalinating ocean water, allowing increased potable water production at an affordable price for consumers.

The European Development Fund has pledged 4.4 billion francs ($25 million) to support the project, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development has pledged between 6.6 billion francs and 9.9 billion francs ($38-56 million) to Djibouti under its renewable energy programme.

Djibouti's government will mobilise efforts to procure the remaining funds, the official news agency reported.
