Three Tanzanian soldiers on a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Sudan's Darfur region drowned while crossing a flooded river on Sunday (August 26th), Tanzania's The Citizen reported.
Colonel Kapambala Mgawe, spokesperson for the Tanzania People's Defence Force, confirmed that Sergeant Julius Chacha, Sergeant Anthony Daniel and Corporal Yusuph Said died when their vehicle was swept away by strong currents during a river crossing.
After checking to see the water levels, the soldiers decided to cross using an armoured vehicle. The water level increased abruptly, taking the three soldiers away, while other soldiers in the vehicle swam to safety. Two of the three bodies have been recovered, and a search for the third is in progress.
Tanzania has 850 soldiers serving in its sixth battalion in Darfur, part of 1,081 peacekeepers deployed in Africa and the Middle East. The drowned soldiers had left Tanzania less than two weeks ago.

MY CONDOLENCES GO TO THE FAMILIES OF THE DECEASED. ALSO THE ARMY AND THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD SHOW CONCERN AND CARE FOR THE IMPORTANT NEEDS OF THE BEREAVED FAMILIES. GOD BLESS TANZANIA
I think the time has come when it’s important for our armies to use modern weapons when they are in various internal and international operations
