Candidates for the position of Somalia's speaker of parliament campaigned Monday (August 27th), a day ahead of the expected vote, AFP reported.

The election committee "received six candidacies for speaker, 11 for first deputy, and four for second deputy speaker", the UN Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS) said Saturday.

The six candidates for speaker -- to be selected by parliament in a secret ballot -- are all former ministers in previous administrations, including two former prime ministers, Hassan Abshir Farah and Ali Khalif Galaydh, and Mohamed Osman Jawari, a former minister under the regime of Siad Barre.

Voting for the posts of speaker and the two deputy speakers has been delayed several times.

The selection of speaker and two deputy speakers will impact the subsequent parliamentary vote for president.

"We are facilitating the timely implementation of this important political step," the UNPOS said Monday, adding it was hopeful the already delayed vote would go ahead on Tuesday as planned.
