Djibouti's coast guard has prevented 1,500 people from migrating illegally this past month, according to coast guard commander Lieutenant Colonel Waiss Omar Bogoreh.

"That is huge when you consider that since the inception of the institution, we have arrested a total of 4,000," Bogoreh said in an interview with Djibouti's La Nation published Thursday (August 16th). Djibouti's coast guard was established by presidential decree in 2010.

Bogoreh said that in addition to fighting human trafficking, the coast guard works to prevent the illegal smuggling of goods and to curb illegal fishing off the country's coast.

"The economy of our country greatly depends on the growth of maritime activity and therefore the coast guard must be ready to respond to new requirements in the unceasingly growing traffic," he said.

Bogoreh praised Djibouti's efforts to fight piracy in the region, saying the country has adhered to international initiatives to prevent piracy in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.
