UN Special Representative of the Secretary General for Somalia Augustine Mahiga during his Eid al-Fitr greetings on Thursday (August 16th) encouraged Somali leaders to remain steadfast in their commitment to ending the transitional government period.
"The date of August 20th is literally on our doorstep," Mahiga said in a statement. "We have come too far to fail when we are just hours away from the end of the transitional period."
He said Somalis should reflect on progress made, as al-Shabaab was pushed out of Mogadishu a year ago and the city has since witnessed renewed economic growth and development.
He praised recent progress in Somali politics, including the ratification of the draft constitution. "I call on all Somalis to capitalise on this momentum and to work cooperatively for the good of your country," he said.
