Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) killed 73 al-Shabaab fighters during clashes in the town of Fafadun in the Gedo region of southern Somalia Wednesday (August 15th), Kenya's Daily Nation reported.

KDF spokesman Emmanuel Chirchir confirmed the toll on his Twitter account, saying Kenyan forces captured more than 100 AK-47s.

Al-Shabaab also claimed it killed more than 60 members of the KDF and Somali government forces.

The number of casualties on both sides could not be independently verified.

At least two Kenyan soldiers were injured in the confrontation, which began when al-Shabaab attacked KDF bases in Fafadun on Wednesday night. Al-Shabaab had planned to overrun the camp, but KDF troops had received prior intelligence reports and laid in wait for combat, the newspaper reported.

The injured soldiers were airlifted to Nairobi for medical care on Thursday.
