The United Nations Security Council in a statement Thursday (August 9th) condemned anyone attempting to impede the Somali peace process.

"The members of the Security Council strongly condemn on-going attempts, including by al-Shabaab, to undermine the transition process," the statement said. "They recall in this regard the Security Council's willingness to take measures against both internal and external actors engaged in actions aimed at undermining the peace and reconciliation process."

The Security Council also called for members of parliament to be selected quickly in a transparent manner.

UN Special Envoy to Somalia, Augustine Mahiga, has reported instances of intimidation and bribery in the selection process. This week, he also urged Somali leaders to adhere to the August 20th deadline to complete the transition into permanent government.
