The Somali government has started a security plan for citizen disarmament and has banned carrying weapons in Mogadishu, UN-funded Radio Bar-Kulan reported Friday (August 10th).
The ban is part of a larger strategy to increase security in the city in preparation for the presidential elections on August 20th, said Minister of Defence Hussein Arab Isse.
Isse called on Mogadishu's residents to co-operate with police and military forces in their efforts to reduce crime and to inform them of any suspicious activities.
He said politicians need to work with the security forces and warned them not to politicise military activities.

Mogadishu was long overdue to drop the guns. Weapons should not not be in the hands of group of private people. I blame the currenmt president for handing lots of weapons to clans after the collapse of UIC, Illeen talo isuma kaa sheegto [If only you had known it].
