A Djiboutian Ministry of Agriculture initiative to rehabilitate dams to fight the effects of drought witnessed some success following rains this week, Djibouti's La Nation reported Wednesday (August 8th).

The programme to utilise surface water and promote sustainable development, which goes by the acronym PROMES-GDT, rebuilt dams at Magdoul, Barra and Dorra. The Magdoul dam held a total of 50,000 cubic metres of water, and the Barra and Dorra dams each formed small lakes. At Dorra, children waded into the water, discovering the joys of swimming.

Programme manager Baragoïta Saïd Mohammed praised the results of PROMES-GDT, as thousands of semi-nomadic pastoralist families who have suffered years of drought will have sustainable access water. "In Magdoul, for example, the people will have sufficient water for two years held in these reservoirs," he said.
