The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board launched a new code of conduct and discipline on Monday (August 6th) in an attempt to speed up the processing of malpractice cases against medical professionals, Kenya's Capital FM reported.
The new code imposes a six-month deadline for processing malpractice cases, a reduction from the previous one-year limit. It also gives the board the authority to suspend individual practitioners or institutions for up to one year for malpractice or six months for substandard performance.
"The code will increase efficiency and will enable the board to clear the backlog of cases that are normally referred to the full board tribunal which is not only time consuming but also a very expensive venture," said Kenyan Attorney General Githu Muigai.
The ethics committee last reviewed the doctor's code of professional conduct in 1999.
