Signatories to the Somali Roadmap meeting in Nairobi issued a draft communiqué on Monday (August 6th) addressing the remaining steps to end transitional rule.
The communiqué, released by the UN Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS), resolved ongoing disagreements between traditional elders from the Dhulbahante clan in northern Somalia regarding the selection of the group's parliamentarians, and reiterated that the selection of lawmakers, the president and the speaker would all follow the Garowe Principles.
Participants also called for the safety of the Technical Selection Committee members, who are charged with ensuring fairness and transparency in the election process. UNPOS will take immediate action to increase protection for committee members, it said.
Signatories to the communiqué reiterated that bribery and intimidation will not be tolerated during the selection process.
