Finnish and Norwegian envoys have praised the Tanzania Forest Service's plan to conserve forests, but said there was room for improvement, Tanzania's Daily News reported Thursday (August 2nd).

The two countries will provide 7.9 billion shillings ($5 million) to support the five-year Mama Misitu campaign, which will raise awareness about the risks of illegal logging and poor forest governance.

At the campaign's launch in Dar es Salaam this week, Finnish Ambassador Sinikka Antila urged the Tanzanian forestry agency to play a major role in curbing illegal logging for export.

"According to the controller and auditor general, only 4% of the country's forests have good plans for sustainable harvesting," she said, adding that much of the revenue from forest products is wasted.
