Gunmen assassinated engineer Ali Hassan Shirwa, designer of Beledweyne's Ugas Khalif Airport, on Thursday (August 2nd), UN-funded Radio Bar-Kulan reported.
For the past few months, Shirwa had led a group of academics advising the regional security administration. He was killed at his office in Beledweyne, according to area police commander Ali Duh Ali.
Government security officials have arrived in the town to begin an investigation.
Hiran Governor Abdifatah Hassan Afrah told the BBC Somali Service that al-Shabaab was behind the assassination. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
