The Galmudug parliament, active for one week, elected Abdi Hassan Qeybdid as regional president on Wednesday (August 1st).
Qeybdid, former chief of Somali police, has been involved in Galmudug politics and said he plans to work on security issues to combat threats to the region posed by pirates and al-Shabaab.
"The central region is facing security threats from kidnappers, pirates and al-Shabaab," Qeybdid told Sabahi. "These groups [attack] areas they have been pushed out of by re-entering them undetected. These are among the matters we will focus on with the help of members of the public."
Qeybdid also welcomed the passing of the new Somali constitution. "It is a step forward, and I expect there will be a discussion on how to work on the remaining matters," he said.
The parliament also re-elected Abdisamad Nur Guled, vice president under former president Mohamed Ahmed Alin. Alin is in Nairobi for medical treatment.
