Special Representative of the African Union Commission for Somalia Boubacar Diarra congratulated the Somali people on the successful ratification of a new constitution on Wednesday (August 1st).

"Today is the culmination of years of hard work by the Somali people with the support of the international community," Diarra said. "The adoption of a provisional constitution by the National Constituent Assembly, representative of the people of Somalia, will protect the gains made and provide a legal foundation for Somalia's new institutions."

The special representative said the upcoming selection of political leaders, including parliamentarians, the speaker of parliament, the prime minister and the president are also essential steps and should be conducted transparently and credibly.

Diarra praised the security gains made by AMISOM and Somali troops, calling the ejection of al-Shabaab instrumental in enabling political progress.

Somalia went through long periods of civil war and became a heaven for terrorists. Chaos, poverty and famine spread for a long period of time and therefore, a new constitution was overdue. The women's quota in occupying public posts is reasonable; pluralism and democracy were established as stipulated in the new constitution; the civic rights of individuals were respected and thus the state has been shaped. This will help in restoring stability, which has been missed for so long in Somalia. So there will be a new way for Somalia, and there will be a new, pluralistic democracy, representing the hopes and dreams of Somalia. We hope Somalia will overcome its financial and economic obstacles and seek real development. We hope Somalia overcomes the obstacle of armed groups, so as to usher in a new era, where it will see the light and the beginning of stability in Somalia and North Africa. We hope to see a strong government in Somalia that can overcome all the problems and all challenges.
