Somali transitional government and African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) forces left Balad Sunday (July 29th) to advance towards Jowhar, capital of the Middle Shabelle region, Somalia's Radio Risaala reported.

Provincial government spokesman Daud Haji Iro said Somali troops reached Qalimow village, where they dispersed and set up positions. Qalimow is 20 kilometres from Jowhar, where al-Shabaab is still in control.

Somali and AMISOM forces seized Balad from al-Shabaab in late June.
