Kenyan police arrested two young men in Kitale carrying four grenades, which police say were planned for use in attacks in Nairobi, Kenya's Daily Nation reported Sunday (July 22nd).
A third man escaped capture, area commander Lucas Ogara said. He said the grenades were "capable of bringing down a big building".
Police acted based on a tip-off from the local community.
The arrests come less than 48 hours after Nariobi provincial police chief Anthony Kibuchi said al-Shabaab may be planning attacks during Ramadan.
Rift Valley police chief John Mbijiwe said police had been trailing the Kenyan youth for some time, as they were suspected to have been recruited by al-Shabaab.
Police transferred the suspects to Nairobi where they are in custody of the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit. "We are interrogating them to know the source of the grenades," Mbijiwe said. "We know they intended to detonate them at crowded places like churches and bus stops," he said.
