Tanzania will produce more than enough food to meet its domestic needs this year, Tanzania's Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Co-operatives Christopher Chiza told parliament on Friday (July 20th).
More than 13.5 million tonnes of food are expected to be harvested this year, meeting 113% of the country's needs, Chiza said, according to Tanzania's Daily News. Large surpluses in eight regions will offset shortages in six others, with the remaining seven regions meeting their food needs, he said.
Chiza said Tanzania's agriculture sector contributed 23.7% to the national economy in 2011. Greater investment in the sector is needed to attain the National Development Plan's desired growth rate of 6%, he said, adding that growth in the agriculture sector reached 3.6% last year, and 4.2% in 2010.
