Tanzania signed several grant agreements with the European Union on Saturday (July 21st) to improve infrastructure and development, Tanzania's Daily News reported.
The grant agreements, valued at 250 billion shillings ($154 million), will support six different initiatives, including road network maintenance, bringing water and sanitation infrastructure to rural areas, improving rural roads, strengthening civil society in Zanzibar, funding the management of the EU portfolio in Tanzania and improving technical co-ordination in the development sector.
Minister for Finance William Mgimwa and European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs signed the agreement in Dar es Salaam in the presence of Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, who was on a three-day visit to inspect EU-funded development projects.
Barroso lauded Tanzania's commitment to development and regional leadership. "Tanzania is playing an increasingly important role in the stability, inclusive and sustainable economic growth of the whole region," he said.
Kikwete said supply side constraints are Tanzania's largest challenge in reducing poverty, especially in rural areas.
