Zamzam Mahmuud Farah and Mohamed Hassan Mohamed, Somalia's Olympic representatives, were greeted by supporters in London on Friday (July 20th), Somalia's RBC Radio reported.
Members of London's Somali community met the athletes at the Olympic village waving the Somali flag and playing the national anthem.
"Today I am very cheerful because I had never thought I would meet Somali athletes representing our homeland, but it happened today," 19-year-old Somali-British Hafsa Farah said during the welcome ceremony.
Farah said the games can help overcome political problems in Somalia. "Sports can unite people," she said, according to Somalia Report. "It can play a big role in bringing rival clans together."
Farah will run in the 400-metre race, and Mohamed in the 1,500-metre race.
