Kenya has signed a 1.4-billion shilling ($16.4-million) loan agreement with Kuwait to build schools and educational infrastructure in Nyamira and Borabu, Kenya's Capital FM reported Monday (July 16th).

Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Jaber al-Sabah and Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki met at the opening of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa to sign the agreement. Funds will be channelled through the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED).

Other projects funded by the KFAED include a feasibility study for the Bura Irrigation Scheme, construction of the new Wajir district hospital and a loan for the Nuno-Modagashe road, Capital FM reported.

At the meeting, Kibaki encouraged further investment. "I invite investors from Kuwait to explore and take advantage of investment opportunities available in our country," he said.

Sheikh al-Sabah praised Kenya's ongoing military engagement in Somalia. "The operation by the Kenya Defence Forces alongside the Transitional Federal Government forces has generated the initial impetus that has resulted in the liberation of many parts of the war ravaged country," he said.
