Police in Puntland have blocked off strategic routes in the Mudug region to prevent the kidnappers of three aid workers from escaping, Garowe Online reported Thursday (July 12th).
Puntland Police have been searching for the three employees of Sweden-based International Aid Services (IAS) since Wednesday, a press release from the Puntland police authority said. "Government intelligence has confirmed that the kidnappers have escaped towards Hobyo district, outside of Puntland jurisdiction," the statement read.
Galkayo police officer Mohamed Ahmed said it is not yet clear whether the kidnappers are members of al-Shabaab. "The kidnappers and al-Shabaab might have been working in a joint operation," he said.
The three aid workers have been identified by the Puntland government as Madoni, head of the delegation, Kariyota, an engineer, and Abdinur Kambasse.
