African Union troops in Mogadishu have recovered more than 500 sacks of stolen food from a captured al-Shabaab training camp at Laanta Buuro, AMISOM said in a statement Thursday (July 12th).
The food had been intended for humanitarian aid, but al-Shabaab used it to feed its fighters in the camp, 40 kilometres west of Mogadishu. The food has since been returned to the local people.
Eleven al-Shabaab members were killed and four were captured when AMISOM took over the camp on Wednesday, the statement said. AMISOM announced that it also captured a cache of weapons, including machine guns and bomb-making equipment.
AMISOM commander Lieutenant General Andrew Gutti said that aid agencies would soon be able to access areas in the country previously blocked by al-Shabaab. "We are fulfilling our mandate to support the Somali peace process and create a conducive environment for the safe delivery of desperately needed humanitarian aid," he said.
