The Kenya Defence Forces seeks to recruit university graduates with training in key technical fields, Kenya's Daily Nation reported Saturday (July 7th).

Recruiting specialists in areas such as software development, geographic information systems and meteorology is "part of a modernisation programme designed to make the forces more efficient", said military spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir. "Like with any institution, there are many aspects of information technology required in modern operations."

Retired Captain Simiyu Werunga said troops with greater training will fulfil the military's need to create more detailed maps of battle terrain, predict weather patterns and operate modern weapons.

Kenyan troops fighting al-Shabaab in Somalia are now formally under the umbrella of the African Union Mission in Somalia.
