Regional police deployed extra security forces in Galmudug administered southern Galkayo Monday night (July 2nd) in response to reports that armed gangs had entered the town, according to area police chief Mohammed Noor Ali.
Ali told reporters that police will do everything possible to prevent criminal activities in the region, UN-funded Radio Bar-Kulan reported. He urged residents to remain vigilant and to report any information about gang activity to the police.
The heightened security follows Monday's assassination of Puntland deputy police chief Colonel Abdullahi Salah Nadalo by armed gunmen in Garowe. Police and the Presidential Guard have launched a search for the killers, but no one has yet been apprehended, according to RBC Radio.
Nadalo was a prominent figure in the Puntland police forces' anti-piracy operations.
