United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned Sunday's attacks on two churches in the Kenyan town of Garissa in a statement delivered by his spokesperson Monday (July 2nd).

"These attacks, which deliberately targeted places of worship, are reprehensible and criminal," the statement said. "No cause can justify the indiscriminate targeting of civilians. The perpetrators of these attacks, and of other recent terrorist acts in Kenya, must be held to account."

Ban extended his condolences to the victims of the attacks and their families. At least 16 people were killed and dozens wounded in the attacks.
