Kenyan prosecutors have dropped terrorism charges against a Jordanian man with asylum status in Switzerland, police officials said on Monday (July 2nd).
"All charges, apart from being in the country illegally, were dropped by the prosecution due to insufficient evidence," deputy police spokesman Charles Owino told AFP.
Magd Najjar, 19, was held in custody after entering Kenya illegally in May. He was charged in a Nairobi court on June 6th for "engaging in organised criminal activities by being a member of al-Shabaab, an outlawed criminal group".
Switzerland at the weekend said it has refused to take Najjar back, indicating he could lose his asylum status over the incident.
Owino said Najjar paid a fine and was released, but did not say where he was.
