The Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) has agreed to loan Kenya $230 million to support agricultural development and urban infrastructure, Kenya's Office of Public Communication announced Sunday (June 24th).
Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki initiated talks with the BNDES during his visit to Rio de Janeiro for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, known as Rio+20.
Kibaki expressed interest in establishing a credit line of up to $2 billion with BNDES to finance priority projects. He said agricultural development, infrastructure and energy are among the priority sectors requiring financing.
The president of BNDES said the bank will loan Kenya $80 million (6.7 billion shillings) to support sugar, ethanol and electricity production, and $150 million (12.6 billion shillings) for the construction of roads and interchanges in Nairobi.
Kibaki was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Ongeri, Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Thuita Mwangi and Kenya's Ambassador to Brazil Kirimi Kaberia, among others.
