Somali leaders endorsed a draft constitution in Nairobi on Friday (June 22nd), a major step in Somalia's transition to permanent government, AFP reported.

Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed signed the draft constitution at the conclusion of a three-day meeting in Nairobi, also attended by Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, Speaker of Parliament Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aadan and representatives from Puntland and Galmudug.

The National Constituent Assembly must now approve the constitution before the end of Somalia's transitional rule on August 20th, after which it will be presented for a nationwide referendum.

UN Special Representative to Somalia Augustine Mahiga praised the signing of a Joint Communiqué between Somali stakeholders in Nairobi on Friday.

"I am most gratified that the signatories have come together in the spirit of co-operation and compromise and have collectively committed to move the process forward," Mahiga said, according to a news release from the UN Political Office for Somalia. "The transitional period will end in less than 60 days and we have no time to lose."
