A burst water pipe in Dar es Salaam has left many residents without water service since last Wednesday, Tanzania's Daily News reported Monday (June 18th).

Dar es Salaam Water and Sewage Corporation (Dawasco) public relations officer Teddy Mlengu said two attempts had been made to repair the pipe, which runs from lower Ruvu to Dar es Salaam.

"Their efforts were expected to bear fruit by last night, as 70% of Dar es Salaam remained without water for the fourth day," Mlengu said on Saturday. Service was expected to return on Sunday afternoon, but as of Monday, parts of the city were still without water.

Residents have taken to buying water from street vendors at a price of 1,000 shillings ($0.63) for a 20-litre bucket, 70% higher than the regular market price, according to Tanzania's The Guardian.

"I keep cattle. They need water every day. Due to this problem, I spend all my profit on buying water. I think, there is need for Dawasco to repair the burst pipe as soon as practicable, otherwise the situation will get worse," said Dar es Salaam resident Janeth Masele.
