The relief agency Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has asked more countries to share the burden of caring for Somali refugees, Kenya's Daily Nation reported on Friday (June 15th).
An MSF report released this week says Kenya's Dadaab refugee camp has become overstretched, and refugees need more places to stay. "The situation in the camps remains unacceptable and -- without significant change -- this pattern of health crises followed by periods of relative calm will continue," it said.
Last year, drought in Somalia caused more refugees to come to the camp -- the world's largest refugee camp with over 500,000 residents. An ensuing humanitarian crisis of disease and malnutrition caused an up-tick in mortality rates.
"Even though people are fed, Dadaab is no longer a refuge," said Dr. Elena Velilla, MSF country representative in Kenya. "It is clear the current model of the camps is not working."
