Somalia's President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed arrived in Afgoye on Monday (June 11th), leading a delegation of ministers and military officials, state-owned Radio Mogadishu reported.

The delegation is scheduled to hold meetings on Tuesday with local officials as well as tribal elders and religious leaders in Afgoye to discuss how to strengthen security and ensure the safety of civilians.

Ahmed will also hold a town hall session with local residents to discuss ways to fight extremism and how to best set up a government administration in the town.

The president's overnight stay in Afgoye marks the first time a Somali president has spent the night in Afgoye in more than 20 years.

African Union and Somali forces captured the former al-Shabaab stronghold Afgoye last month.
