The African Union Mission in Somalia and Transitional Federal Government (TFG) security forces are preparing an offensive against al-Shabaab in Balad town, 30 kilometres north of Mogadishu, according to AMISOM General Ugadi Kiki.
"After securing the Afgoye corridor, crowded with internally displaced people, we are just setting up another major attack against the militants remaining in Lower Shabelle region," Kiki said, the Shabelle Media Network reported on Friday (June 8th). "That is our next step of our Free Shabelle Operation."
In related news, Somali Minister of Defense Hussein Arab Isse told the cabinet that AMISOM and TFG forces have succeeded in securing many villages and are pressing on towards al-Shabaab-held Kismayo, the Shabelle Media Network reported on Friday.
Isse said there will be also a martial court in Afgoye, where any anyone in the army who commits a crime against the people will be tried.
