Somali government forces and Kenyan troops captured Afmadow town in Lower Juba on Thursday (May 31st), Somali military chief General Abdikadir Sheikh Ali Diini announced.
The joint forces entered the town after Thursday morning gun battles that drove out al-Shabaab and killed at least 10 people, according to Somalia's RBC Radio.
"After heavy operations, the joint forces took control of Afmadow town and the city is secured now," Diini said, according to RBC Radio.
Afmadow is the latest strategic town to fall to the allied forces. Al-Shabaab's loss of Afgoye on May 25th, a key stronghold, dealt a severe blow to the al-Qaeda-affiliated group.
Al-Shabaab confirmed the fall Afmadow in a statement on Thursday.
"The Mujahedeen fighters tactically withdrew from Afmadow this afternoon and the allied enemy forces have entered the city without fighting," al-Shabaab commander Sheikh Mohamed Ibrahim told AFP.
Al-Shabaab fighters in Afmadow had held back Kenyan troops for months, blocking the advance towards Kismayo.
Kenya's army chief said on Wednesday that AMISOM will capture the al-Shabaab-controlled port city of Kismayo within three months.
