Kenya's army chief said on Wednesday (May 30th) that AMISOM will capture the al-Shabaab-controlled port city of Kismayo within three months.

The port town of Kismayo is the last major town controlled by al-Qaeda-allied al-Shabaaab, which has switched to guerrilla tactics in recent months as regional forces wrest territory from them.

"This target will happen before August when the Transitional Federal Government mandate expires," said General Julius Karangi in Nairobi, according to AFP. Troops from the Kenya Defence Forces currently operate in Somalia under the AMISOM umbrella.

"We continue to exert pressure on al-Shabaab," Karangi said.

Meanwhile, Kenyan troops entered the southern Somali town of Afmadow on Wednesday.

"Afmadow is falling; there is still fighting, but by daybreak it will be ours," said Kenyan army spokesman Colonel Cyrus Oguna.

Al-Shabaab fighters in Afmadow, which lies some 120 kilometres into Somalia from the Kenyan border, had held back Kenyan troops for months, blocking the advance towards Kismayo.

I am not a Muslim, but my joy is the entire world living in peace. No one should kill the other in the name of religion, because that is not nature. Nature and Religion should reside in our common sense, because that which is good need not be explained. Somali must be free at last from the hands of criminals.
