The Tanzanian government assured foreign tourists and the public on Wednesday (May 30th) that Zanzibar's security is now under control following riots that broke out in this island last weekend, Tanzania's Daily News reported.
"This was just an isolated incident that has been brought under control by the government," said Minister of Tourism and Natural Resources Khamis Kagasheki in a statement. "There is peace in Zanzibar as we speak. There were no reports of destruction of hotels or attacks on tourists."
Religious leaders from Zanzibar condemned the violence on Wednesday, calling on the government to prosecute the perpetrators, Tanzania's The Guardian reported.
The government said it is committed to safeguarding freedom of religion in Zanzibar and people of all religious sects have the freedom of worship.
"Zanzibar shall remain a secular state and all religions shall be treated equally in the eyes of the government and we will give no chance to anybody who wants to make other people feel inferior because of their religious affiliation," said Minister of State in the Second Vice President's Office Mohammed Aboud Mohammed.
