Somali security forces arrested 120 al-Shabaab suspects in Afgoye on Wednesday (May 30th), a day after President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed escaped an assassination attempt in the newly liberated town.
The suspects were arrested during a large-scale search operation in Afgoye and its surrounding suburbs, intended to clean out any remaining al-Shabaab elements, Somalia's RBC Radio reported.
Two high-ranking al-Shabaab officials, whose names were not publicly released, were among the arrested suspects, according to Colonel Abdullahi Ali Anod, commander of Somali forces in Afgoye.
"We will not halt the operations until we make sure that Afgoye and the main corridor to the capital is secure enough," Anod said.
On Tuesday, al Shabaab spokesman Sheikh Abdiasis abu Mus'ab said the group maintains a presence in the Afgoye corridor and will continue attacks against the government forces, the news outlet reported.
