The speaker of Tanzania's National Assembly opened a three-day conference on performance audit and accountability on Monday (May 28th), during which she called on members of parliament to adhere to professional ethics and integrity.
The root cause of poverty in most African countries comes from a lack of integrity and accountability of those in public offices, Speaker Anne Makinda said, according to Tanzania's Daily News.
"Elected MPs should lead by example so that those who elected them can have confidence in them. MPs should not fail the people who voted them into office," Makinda said.
Also on Monday, the speaker called on regional officials to use creative measures to serve the public and solve problems facing the people in an effort to alleviate poverty nationwide, Tanzania's The Guardian reported.
