Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed escaped an ambush unharmed on Tuesday (May 29th), after al-Shabaab fighters attacked his armoured convoy in the recently liberated Afgoye corridor, AFP reported.

"Desperate terrorist militants tried to disturb the visit of the president at the Afgoye corridor by ambushing his convoy, but security forces repulsed them," said Somali security official Mohamed Moalim. "The president is well and continued his trip smoothly."

Two Somali soldiers were wounded when gunmen opened fire as Ahmed drove down the Afgoye corridor for the first time since its capture by African Union troops and Somali government soldiers on Friday. These allied troops also guarded Ahmed's convoy.

The pro-al-Shabaab website Somalimemo.net said al-Shabaab militants carried out the attack against "the head of the enemy".

Why is it that in Kenya it is the citizens who elect members of parliament and the president and yet leaders are chosen for the people of Somalia by united oppressors?
