Director General of Somaliland's Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources Mohamed Elmi Adan encouraged local fishermen to take advantage of the region's plentiful waters and rebuild the fishing industry.
Adan was speaking to fishermen at Berbera Marine College who were gathered to receive new fishing equipment donated by the Italian government through the UN Development Programme. He told the fishermen that the ministry's mission is to improve the quality of life for all coastal communities, the Somaliland Press reported on Wednesday (May 23rd).
Adan expressed hope that Somaliland would become a major exporter of fish, but stressed that new techniques and technologies must be developed in order to be competitive. He said the ministry plans to implement educational programs and research projects to advance citizens' ability to work more productively.
